I love writing, the process, and writing instruction. Of all the skills I teach, I believe writing is the most crucial and enduring. From my first year as a teacher, I have weaved explicit writing instruction into my curriculum.

One major shift I have undertaken is from teaching writing as a series of negative lessons (don’t do this, fix this) to writing as a positive experience. Writing is a highly individualized learning experience, and I use MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) to help me differentiate. With technology, I point students to specific tutorials (OWL Online is my favorite) and hold them accountable. (Of course, I help them with comprehension too!) Students also keep a personal writing page on their blog, chronicaling their specific developments as a writer.
